The magnetic rope inspection device ROPESYS by ROTEC was showcased at the international conference “Subsea Lifting and Marine Operations 2024.” The event took place on December 3rd and 4th in Stavanger. Dr. Martin Wehr from ROTEC, together with Dr. Alan Bell from Bridon-Bekaert, presented on “Advanced Applications of MRT & Computer Vision in Rope Monitoring.

Together for Innovative Rope Inspection

ROTEC closely collaborated with Bridon-Bekaert – The Ropes Group (https://ropes.bekaert.com/). Together, the two companies developed a system that integrates Bridon-Bekaert’s Visiontek rope inspection device with the magnetic rope inspection device ROPESYS. This combination enables comprehensive and precise rope inspections.

Technical Integration for Better Results

In 2024, the developers integrated both devices through software. This allows users to control both devices via a single software interface. Additionally, the systems capture their data synchronously, enabling direct comparison of the magnetic inspection results with the camera images.

The system provides many important data points, such as:
Diameter progression,
Stroke length progression,
Location and number of wire breaks in 3D,
Loss of metallic cross-section.

This enables customers to receive precise and comprehensive reports that accurately document the condition of the ropes.

Flexibility through Versatile Use

Both the magnetic rope inspection device ROPESYS by ROTEC and the Visiontek system can be used independently or in combination. Since 2024, the integrated solution has provided reliable and detailed results, which is why it is frequently used for rope monitoring.

Groundbreaking Developments

ROTEC and Bridon-Bekaert continue to focus on technological advancement. Bridon-Bekaert is currently increasing the speed of the Visiontek system to 5 m/s. Additionally, ROTEC is optimizing the analysis software, which uses artificial intelligence to automatically detect and classify faults.

Conclusion

The conference provided an excellent opportunity for networking in the offshore industry. A big thank you to the organizers who made this important event possible.
